      Medieval monastery complex Goshavanq was one of the largest spiritual and educational centers of Armenia. It was erected in 1188 on the site of the ruined monastery of Sparta.

      A monastery in the woods, in the valley of a mountain river. Due to this natural environment he had no defensive walls. Monastery was named in honor of an outstanding writer, scientist and politician Mkhitar, who took an active part in the construction of the temple complex. At the monastery were built three churches, library, tower, school, chapel. Center of the ensemble - the tallest building of the church of the Virgin (St. Astvatsatsin), which is crowned by a large dome.

      In 1972 the monastery was opened Historical and Architectural Museum.
